LYDD is a small market town and parish, 36 miles S.E. from Maidstone, 17 south from Ashford, and four west from New Romney, in the liberty and union of Romney Marsh. The .church is dedicated to All Saints, and is a noble building, in good repair. The living is a vicarage and rectory, in the patronage of the Archbishop of Canterbury; the Rev. Benjamin Cobb is the incumbent. The population in 1861 was 1605. Pigwell is half a mile S.W.; Scotney Court, two miles and a half S.W.; Belgar, two miles N.E.;
Jack's Court, half a mile N.E.; West Brook, one mile north; Cheyne Court is the name of several farms, four miles west.
