Middlesex and Buckinghamshire Advertiser, Uxbridge, Harrow and Watford Journal. June 15 1907 **
Middlesex Licensing Committee - Uxbridge Licences Refused.
The Three Legs.
In opposition to the renewal of the license of the Three Legs ale-house, Windsor street, Uxbridge, of which Mr George Walter Cross is licensee, and Mr Alfred Donne Woolls (Messrs Harman and Co, Ixbridge) the registered owner.
This was a case of two adjoining houses in a congregated area, there being 16 full licenses within 220 yards. The New Inn, the adjacent house, had stabling and coach house accommodation, and was in all respects a much better house.
The New Inn, though not as large as the Three Legs, had better accommodation. The Three Legs was one storey higher than the New Inn, and it also had a club room.
The Three Legs was one of the oldest houses in Uxbridge. It had a good and increasing trade. The house did five barrel weekly, and was "tied" for beer only. In gingerbeer it did five barrels per week, and six dozen minerals. The turn-over averaged £18 weekly.
The Three Legs was much the better house, and was much the better for supervision, because it stood on a corner, with a return frontage, and opposite the police station. Two clubs met on the premises. It was objected that they had no stabling accommodation. The New Inn stabling was used for the storage of goods.
His clients felt that this was not the kind of house which should have been selected, and they were anxious to retain the license.
Mr Cross, the licensee, said his trade was an improving one, and he supplied bread and cheese to customers, and also teas.
The committee refused renewal, and the licence sent forward for the assessment and allocation of the amount for compensation.
