St George in East Index
In 1901 the directory shows this address as being two doors from Martha street & station row. Latterly it is at the junction with Cornwall street. It is a chandlers shop by 1913.
A listing of historical public houses, Taverns, Inns, Beer Houses and Hotels in St George In East, London - in East London.
Gladstone, 37 Dean street E1, licensee Patrick Donovan - circa 1907 to 1910
My research suggests the LCTU (London Carmen's Trade Union) was active at the time and I wonder if there was a strong Irish connection to the union. That might explain why Patrick had his name shown as O'Donovan - the "O" had been dropped generations before leaving Ireland. *

My Great Grandfather, Augustus Williams was a beer house keeper. It appears
that 1901 and 1911 records show him as beer keeper at The Gladstone, 37 Dean
Street. I believe that after he died in 1913 his son Harry Williams took
over the licence. My grand father, Frank Sheppard Williams was at the
Foresters, Stepney ***

There is a break when Patrick Donovan is the licensee at this address. My great grandfather, Patrick Donovan, is listed in the Post Office Directory as a beer retailer at 37 Dean Street in 1910. There has always been a family history reference to Patrick running a pub before them emigrating to Australia and I have a photo of him standing outside The Gladstone, presumably taken in 1910, *
