The Trask family

The Trask family

Kindly provided by Samuel Trask

My grandfather Samuel Ernest Trask was landlord of the Belfast Tavern (now just called The Bell) from the early 1930s. I know he was there in 1933 as I have a postcard to him at that address, but it may have been earlier. He died in 1943 but his wife Miriam Trask then ran it, with his sister Rose Trask, until the late 1950s. ***

My grandfather, Samuel Ernest, was a Wine Cellarman when he was young. My father told me that he was the head Cellarman at The Grand Hotel in Brighton before he took over The Somerset Arms in Somerset Street, Brighton. He then moved on to run The Burton Arms, at 32 Russell Street, Brighton  where I believe that my father was born in 1917. Then sometime between then and 1934 the family took over the Belfast Tavern, but it might be significant that my father couldn’t remember much about Russell Street.

Another member of the family on that census return took a pub in Brighton for a time. Both Robert and William joined the Grenadier Guards on 4 Sep 1914. Surprisingly, they both survived WW1 and Robert took on The Northumberland Arms for a while before becoming a caretaker at Tamplins Brewary – I’ve no idea of the dates though.
