The new bar recently opened at the Chandos, St martins Lane, with its
graceful murals and curved counter, it is well worth a visit. But the old
bar, and particularly the counter, had its interest for the customer.

The old bar in Chandos inscribed by the troops from Fiji in the 1914 -
1918 war
Kindly provided by Alex Wilkinson
Fiji troops in this country made the Chandos their unofficial headquarters
during the 1914-18 War and many of them carved their names on the counter.
During the last war, the sons of the men who carved their names came to the
house and added their own. When the house was being renovated, two of the
1914-18 veterans from Fiji called and were horrified to find the counter
removed. They called at the Brewery in Brick lane and the Directors gave
them the old counter, which has now been cleaned and polished. It will be
sent to Suva, the capital of Fiji, where it will be an unofficial war
monument. (1951 - Black eagle)***
