The earliest Licensee I have discovered thus far is a Jesse Comfort in 1876 due to the earliest reference to it in the Rate Book at Lavender Hill Library. *

My relative is Robert Henry Thompson (b 21 may 1852) who was manager in the 1901 & 1911 census and is shown living there as manager with his wife Mary Ann Young; His son Robert John Thompson, born 17 mar 1889 is the one listed in 1919.

Another son listed the hotel as his address and occupation barman in WW1, that was Frank Radley Thompson.
I believe that Charlotte S Young and Mary Ann who was Robert Henry Thompsons wife were sisters & both born in Leytonstone. ***

Im the current Publican for the above site and have been so since 1996. I am currently researching the building for possible planning and historical protections. So far I have discovered that it was originally one of five pubs on this road and started life as a beer house. I have yet to find out its original build date although from other building info I suspect it was 1863, being substantially rebuilt in 1890 by the Holloway Bros, to designs by Kerslake & Mortimer Architects. The Holloway Bros also built Albert Bridge o the Thames and the most recent remodelling of the Bank of England. *
