Sam Coles, Late of the Running Horses, Erith - 1911
Kindly provided by David Yates
My Great Grandfather Samuel Coles was the Proprietor of the Bull's Head
Public House in Crayford in 1911. My understanding is that the Bull's
Head was bombed during the Second World War and a number of children
died there as they were gathering there to be transported into the
countryside. Apparently a church was built on the site of the pub in
memory of the children.
You may be interested to know that prior to the Bull's Head my Great
Grandfather was the Owner & Manager of the
Running Horses Pub in Erith and
the Jolly Millers in South Darenth. He entered into the Public House
business in 1904 after having worked for Sir Thomas Callender of
Callender Cable & Construction Co. Ltd.. He emigrated to Canada in 1912
with his wife and several children. ***
