The 1881 census shows Elizabeth HEDGES, 19, born Stoke in Suffolk, as a servant. I believe the name is a mis-transcription of my grandmother, Elizabeth PLEDGER. She was born in Stoke-by-Clare in Dec.1861 and it seems very likely that this pub is where she met her future husband. He was William Hills, a railway worker, and lived at that time in Waddington Street which runs off Leyton Road. He was known to enjoy a beer or two, so was more than likely to have called at the pub en route home from the railway. *
