What is New on the London & UK South Pub History Site

2010:

February 2010:

It's the 7th February, 2010. I thought I was dreaming the other day. There are two pub sites, one at deadpubs.co.uk, the other at londonpublichouse.com. Actually, they are the entirely same site etc etc. The aggressive campaign for deadpubs seems to have worked, except for Pubs history we now find another site as #1 ( the same site, different name).

Google, which is brilliant most of the time, and also sells adwords and adsense does not appear to have worked this out. Google is obviously a monster.

As an aside to this, adwords purchasing does not appear to have improved my adsense earnings, and therefore it is BAD, and a waste of money! Google, your adwords is / are a waste of money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will cancel my adwords account in the morning. Why don't we all cancel our adwords accounts tomorrow?

It's February already, and the cold snaps are on the way! I have been aggressively updating and rebuilding the 1944 London Public House listing for the last few days. The listing is quite unique, as many many road name changes happened in London. about this time; plus obviously there were many Public Houses bombed beyond repair in the World War.

I am really pleased to say that I am on course to be listing at least 80% of the Pubs in London, maybe even 90% from this initial 1944 Pubs update. The search engine also recognises at least two thirds of the 1944 addresses in the first instance. I like numbers, but this is amazing, trust me on this.

Thank you to all my contributors, whether you contribute an odd fact or twenty images a day, you have all made this site the brilliant success that it is. The search engine is pretty damned good, too.

The other thing I noticed this evening was my ranking for 'Pub History' in google. deadpubs.co.uk dropped from number 3, but londonpublichouse.com reappeared at number 1. This is a silly google move, as I just started buying adwords for deadpubs.co.uk from google (albeit, they are the same site!).......; hey ho.

January 2010:

Have you noticed the NEW twitter feed? I like it. It is useful, as you can delete stupid comments quite easily, which is also important, and allows me to add quick updates rather than logging in to this page.

Near the end of January 2010, and I am attempting to add Middlesex. It is darned confusing. There are lists of Pubs in Trade directories which often quote a place, e.g. Hampstead or Kilburn. Kilburn is part of Hampstead, Kilburn is also part of Hampstead & Willesden. Some of the census for Kilburn is possibly in St Johns Wood (e.g. NW8). Which shall I use????

In addition, much of Hampstead, Middlesex is listed as part of London; as is Willesden. But it was part of Middlesex previously. Confused? It is a matter of taking a point in time, and sticking with this - I chose 1899 (I think), but this does not help a lot. More to follow.

Another major update has been in Brentford, in Middlesex. Stephen sent me a host of pictures and the fact that there were forty Pubs in the High Street of Brentford at the turn of the century. A lot of these disappeared for the tram system, and other reasons. Enjoy the major update. Do you have anything to add?

Part of the reason I am backlogged is thanks to Colin Ager, who supplied me with two massive updates of Reading, in Berkshire - it has taken me days to update the site, which represents absolutely months of research by Colin - Thank you.

I am a little backlogged at present due to a rush of updates. All emails have been read, and I am adding material as quickly as possible. Keep the Pub history additions coming and all will be added in due course, many thanks, Kevan.

Happy New Year in 2010. Just for those who read no further, I spend about 60 hours a week on this FREE site, in addition to a full working week and considerable travel, plus many Trade Union activities.

If you have material to add to the Pub history site/s, especially pictures and family history - please keep sending me details. If you are just emailing about a copy of a picture you would like, then I may take quite a lot longer to respond (dependant on how busy I am,  etc.). Don't forget to use the excellent search engine which is on every page, it is pretty good, and very useful for tracking address changes.

Special thanks go to Stephen Harris and Colleen, and many, many others; for all their hard work in updating this incredible Pubs history site, and history directory of the South of England. Thank you.

December 2009 :

Middlesex has finally been added, and much is now available.

Apparently the dead pubs site has a mention in the magazine - 'Who Do you think you are', this month.

November 2009 :

A bad weekend because of a dodgy website that kept crashing. This has slowed me from adding updates - I am seriously contemplating moving to the 'best & most expensive providers' to keep the site operational. More to follow. I hope the outages were nothing to do with a new site - barclaycarp.com which reports the failings of a fictitious bank, and unnamed persons (from this fictitious bank) maybe not liking my reporting.

I have just traced my lineage back to Abraham, whom was a relative of mine. I do not have proof of this, but census records appear to missing for some of this period. Much of the ancestry in this period was through word of mouth, some is recorded in a major new best seller - the Bible.

I have been continuing to evaluate the 1911 census for England & Wales. It has been interesting, and although the 1911 site claims to have a far better claim towards 'less' transcription errors (than, say Ancestry.com), I am far from convinced. In fact, I think the transcribers of the 1911 census have little idea of the UK, or local areas, as I have seen thousands of stupid transcription errors - I really mean silly, and lazy errors.

The 1911 census does offer a considerable attraction, including a variety of differing images of an area, often with additional information; and the 1911 census can be searched by address (with many roads incorrectly added [NOT] to the search engine). It is a very useful addition to finding ancestors and is worth spending the extra £60 for a years access [for 1911 ONLY], but I doubt if their earlier census search are any good - I would not sign up for the full package for this reason. To summarise, I would not use the 1911 search engine, because of the general problems and transcription errors. My recommendation is to only use Ancestry for 1901 and earlier. I am NOT advertising 1911 as they blocked me from any advertising revenue, [BUT] this is a honest appraisal of their service, which I believe needs a complete overhaul . I continue researching my personal family history in Pubs.

A first few entries for Hampshire.

A question. If I moved the Essex Pub site back to the 'deadpubs.co.uk' site today, how many links would I- break? Let's find out!!! Essex intro page is now at - IndexIan; and all the Esex Pubs are now back on this main site. The 1911 census has been quite useful, once you get used to the various search engines. Romford and Stratford have now been updated to include their 1911 census details. The search engine updates once a week, usually on a Monday.

Incidentally, I have spent a few days updating the family tree from the 1911 census, which has fixed quite a few errors. I have yet to add all of the family tree, as it is too vast, but will eventually include all of the Pubs site entries; at some stage.

October 2009 :

Well, I thought it about time to start adding Oxfordshire ( not all immediately). This will be a slow process, but hey ho. More to follow, and a lot of hard work, too. If you have any history to add to the Oxfordshire area, please let me know. I have just added the Oxfordshire Beer Retailers from 1903.

A busy month was had in September. I fell out BIG time with Sky and Barclaycard, the latter being a major scumbag that harasses people & their family (blog removed for legal reasons - see Barlaycarp.com), and meanwhile I have also been updating Sussex heavily - mainly Brighton & Arundel, both have had a major revamp to their pubs history. On the Skycard problem, I signed up for Barclaycarp.com, but I have as yet to do anything useful with the site - maybe I will, maybe I won't. YES WE WILL ' Tell the world what a bunch of scumbags they are, i.e Barclaycard (to be precise, with total clarity on the matter)'. I heard back from the banking ombudsman today, they are really busy (probably mainly due to Barclay) , and they will be in touch soon.

Colin has promised me with a Windsor update shortly, to complete the Berkshire site - phase one.

September 2009:

The Pub history site just continues to grow. I spend time on any area that people add updates to, which could be  (currently are) Aldgate, Aldersgate, St George Hanover Square, Berkshire, Shoreham in Sussex - anywhere really. You supply me with updates, I will spend a lot of time on an area.  What do you think of the new sitemap? Just for completeness, I have dropped the site pubsgen.com (and the emails will not work any longer for the same reason - blame lunarpages for an inferior service, I am sure that one of their accounts team is selling these popular web addresses to his mates - do I care?).

EXIT, VOICE & LOYALTY ( a brilliant reader which was part of my final degree year with the Open University). The latter (loyalty) does not exist, so a lot of voice, and a quick exit from Lunarpages, Sky and Barclaycard is now happening. (Angry and harassed Kevan).

The Pub History site goes from strength to strength, and really needs a proper sitemap (which has been added!) -  And I am now adding London suburbs. If anybody has a view on the sites weaknesses, please let me know.

Thank you to everyone who adds detail to the  Pub History site/s. Work is incredibly busy at present, so email me again in a few weeks, if you do not get a response. Thanks - Kevan

August 2009:

End August - I have just spent a few days in Vienna (Holiday 2) - what an amazing place. A lot more detail is to come soon .. - words and pictures cannot really describe the beauty, history and culture of Vienna (although I have to say that the horse/carriage rides are ridiculously expensive (about £90 for an hour). As I find time, I will post a few pictures and categorize some of the better places to visit, plus travel arrangements.

My interest is in any detail about the RAF in Vienna, post-World War 2. Between about 1950 and 1955, there were a number of allied troops posted in Vienna, and I am particularly interested in the RAF postings, and where they may have been situated. Any help is very much appreciated.

I have finished updating the entirety of Mile End & St Luke, from the 1901 census. The update includes an array of new beer retailers and licensed premises, to the London pub history site.

I have just taken a couple of weeks well earned break (Holiday 1); and without any form of internet connection, I went to work updating my online family tree in the evenings. This has been the first update for four years, and I hope others find it useful - there are also a few Essex pubs in the story!

The Pub History site just continues to grow. The whole of Berkshire is now (probably) added thanks to Colin; large swathes of the South East now have a photograph, thanks to Stephen. Lots of old pictures are on the site, thanks to Colleen. And lots of others contribute to individual pages from their own family history, too. Please, if you are going to copy material from this site, please add a proper reference to source information -in internet terms it is called a hyperlink.

Recently, I saw a comment about the sites as being too commercial, which they are definitely NOT. All information is freely available, although I do advertise on the site to cover costs. I did remove much of the advertising, in order to raise charitable funds instead, for deserving charities.

July 2009:

The UK is now losing 52 pubs a week (except Romford in East London); and there are now only 53,466 Pubs left. At this rate I will be able to list them all, methinks. This Pub History site now covers most of the South of England, with strengths in Essex, London, Kent, Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Surrey, Sussex, Berkshire and Dorset. It also includes large parts of Middlesex, enjoy. Please let me know of any additions you can add to the site/s. Thanks.

I was hacked into on a couple of my major sites recently, this was just on the main index pages where a few strange advertising links were added. So, as from now, if you spot any of my links pointing to a strange site, please let me know - thanks.

The Kent area is finally being updated, which is long overdue - all updates are on this site, and a major update I have been working on is Maidstone (please let me know if I have made any mistakes, and also add any new material). The Berkshire site was created by Colin Ager, many thanks. This is an amazing addition to the site - see Berkshire.

23 June 2009:

Essex (pubcensus.co.uk), Kent, London, Berkshire, Sussex, Surrey (deadpubs.co.uk), Suffolk (suffolkvillages.com), Hertfordshire (Hertspubs), & Cambridge Pubs , Dorset (deadpubs.co.uk). London1912 (A street directory for London in 1921). Essex 1841 (general Essex & Suffolk 1841 census).

Berkshire Pub History is updating at an amazing speed. Colin Ager is sending me ten towns/villages a day. Thanks Colin.

The Lewes / Hastings areas have seen a major update, including many pictures.

May 2009 :

A new addition coming soon is Berkshire, here are a few to get started, all supplied by Colin Ager.

The Ancestry site for Census , has recently added Trade Directories, or it is only recently that I have noticed. Most of these are available for free on the Historical Directories site; but I was particularly pleased to see a better range for Middlesex, which I lack a good deal of information, especially for 1866 & 1878. The latter part of the weekend has been spent updating areas such as Hackney, Stoke Newington & Shoreditch; (especially Hackney) - this has been a very useful task, as I had a considerable amount of Hackney 1861 census material which did not link in correctly. I am sure I have made mistakes along the way, but hey ho!

Just a few Surrey Pubs added; well actually quite a lot - but the tip of the iceberg. Stephen Harris has updated the Hastings & Lewes district with a whole host of new pictures, and other historical information; and I have added a considerable amount of additional census data to these areas.

April 2009:

Stephen Harris has been in Lewes, Sussex, and has so far sent me four updates  (many hours of work)  on the Pubs in Lewes (and lots of new picture and history details) -  incredible, and there is apparently more to come.

A fairly major update of St Georges Hanover Square has just been (almost) completed. This includes a complete 1901 census addition, plus many later updates of publicans & beer retailers.

Further updates have been added for large parts of London (including Chelsea, St George Hanover & Camberwell - note the two pages in Camberwell); massive additional information has been added to Bishops Stortford by Colin Ager, brilliant. Thanks.

Stephen Harris, as ever, has supplied the site with hundreds of new pictures, and additional detail, for all areas. Bill Rigby continues to add extra detail to the South East of London. Fred Roll, likewise, has been sending me more detail and pictures for the SE of London. The Dorset site has had a whole host of pictures added by Mal Nichols. Thanks to Mal, as he is a bit off of the track from the other sites. Colin Ager is spending vast amounts of time on an area at a time, a bit like myself, and has supplied major updates for Herts, e.g. Bishops Stortford - he is also working on the Berkshire area, which will be a massive NEW  update to the site.

The latest update (1901 census) is for St George in the East, and coincides with the new 1921 street directory, which is proving useful in cross-referencing the Pubs and street addresses. The 1921 directory should now be in the search directory database.

The London street directory for 1921 is building fast; well, as fast as I am able! So far, large parts of East London have been added, e.g. mainly Hackney, Shoreditch & St Lukes.

A new site - london1912.co.uk; which is largely a set of Trade Directories for London & suburbs. Enjoy. The first additions have been in the East London area, and mostly for 1921, but more detail will be added as time permits.

Thanks, as usual, to the many people who add detail to the site/s; including Mal Nichols who has sent me hundreds of pictures for the Dorset site.

Importantly, I must not forget Bev Howlett, who seamlessly adds updates for Surrey areas ( plus she covers Norfolk & Cambridge).

Thanks to all my contributors. Kevan

February 2009:

Cambridge & Ely have their first pictures (thanks Stephen). Colin Ager is currently updating various areas, including Suffolk and Herts; and is currently working on Berkshire (this will take a while). Fred Roll is supplying me with pictures for Fulham and other areas, hence the Fulham update. Feel free to get involved in this project to add Pubs in the South east of England onto the map, particularly the closed / redundant pubs - all pictures welcome.

This is largely an update on the sites. I am working on Fulham, slowly;  Stephen Harris has hundreds of pictures to add to various areas (great guy); and lunarpages is making a mess of my sites again (not so great); after deleting my main site three times consecutively (morons in accounts section)! All sites will be moving slowly to other providers, as I had similar BAD experience with ipowerweb, who were also completely useless.

The Limehouse and Poplar areas have both been updated with a complete 1901 census addition; plus a massive update of Bromley for 1901 which added forty five new Pubs and Beer Retailers. There is also a massive update of census and Trade Directory information for Hitchin in Herts by Colin Ager.

The (londonpublichouse.com) site may be archived, and the 'what's new' detail now resides here. The last week has included a complete re-visit to St Martins in the Fields in 1891; and Woolwich in 1901 - the latter includes North Woolwich which was in Essex, now London. All of these updates are ready to be added to the relevant pages, but not done so. Meanwhile, Stephen Harris has been working on the Walthamstow area, and Colin Ager continues in Suffolk. The Suffolk area is branching into Norfolk, so expect a major addition sometime soon of the entire Norfolk area. More to follow ....

January 20th 2009:

The (londonpublichouse.com) site is NOW ARCHIVED. Here are some links for future updates for Essex Pubs ; London Pubs ; and Herts, Kent, Suffolk and Dorset already have their own sites.

December 2008:

New Years Eve 2008 - an important update to the site has been a change in the search engines, so that each individual search engine will search ALL of the Pubs sites. Did you know that the historical Pubs site now covers most of the South of England, and is continuing to grow. Many pages only show a few entries, and apologies for this, but it gives a page to add extra detail as I find the time to add detail.

The historical pubs site is entirely run by me in my spare time, and there is never enough of this. I rely on people helping, of which there are too many to name; but Stephen Harris, Bill Rigby and Colleen are my biggest contributors. Thank you.

Christmas Day - Merry Christmas to ALL. The Cambridge site is now full functional, with most pubs listed. I am now working through the Cambridge 1891 census to add Publicans who are listed as Beer Retailers. All sites have been added to the same search engine, so a search from any site will now search all sites for surname, address etc. Enjoy!

It is only half-way through December, but as my main contributors of photographs have taken a short break - why not add a few new areas? Dorset is now complete for first additions, Hertfordshire is continuing with a complete listing of all Pubs and Beer Houses in the 1891 census. And Cambridge has also been added, more of Cambridgeshire to follow. So here are the current places to find historical PUBS.

Cambridge, Dorset, Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, London & Middlesex, Suffolk, Surrey, Sussex - I think this is all at present, please keep the updates and pictures coming.

Now, Cambridge, Herts and Dorset are currently being added & updated.

I MUST fix many of the broken links as Pubs get moved around to various different sites, for various reasons.

November 2008 :

The Whole of Dorset is being added NOW, about a third so far, to the letter K - Pub name. Regular Hertfordshire updates are continuing.

The Middlesex update that has started to happen, slowly, is to be hosted on my new site at deadpubs.co.uk ; this includes all of Tottenham,  (to start with), which I have been working on for some time off the scenes. Lunarpages have been really good after deleting my site (only three times so far) , for no apparent reason- a management decision was required, and I now have a £10 gift voucher! The site is now, slowly being moved to deadpubs.co.uk, a bit at a time.

Additions are continuing as normal, I am now making regular  DAILY backups of the site / s, in case lunarpages delete the site / s again (AGAIN ??), without warning - wombats!

October 2008:

Breaking NEWS - Lunarpages deleted this site for the third time in the matter of months! I have to say that I am fast losing patience, and three months of my latest hard work on this site has been lost. Fortunately, Herts, Suffolk and Kent are relatively safe, as I backed up the sites last night. This site did not fare so well. Apologies to all my contributors, and I hope lunarpages are NOT proud of what they have done.  I had booked a five year deal with them to run this site, but I have just cancelled this stupid idea. New site will be deadpubs.co.uk ; with an alternative UK provider; this is slightly more expensive, but apparently a safer solution to deletion of a site.

A lot has changed this month. I now have separate sites for the Hertforshire Pubs, the Suffolk Pubs, and also the Kent Pubs. The weakness of this, is that the search engine is different for each site, but I use a common email on all sites; hence I get requests for information regarding a Pub, and I have no idea where the Pub was found! The other weakness is that these sites are also hosted with lunarpages, and are likely to be deleted at a whim. I would be interested on feedback as to whether this is normal practice.

On the positive side, what a great bunch of sites? If you want to see more on a particular site, how about contributing some useful information and pictures?

The usual updates are continuing, including the eventual inclusion of some more Middlesex data, only Kilburn, so far - more to follow. As ever, Stephen Harris is supplying me with countless photographs, and Bill Rigby is updating me heavily with South London Pub names, and information. Thanks to All.

September 2008:

August was missed due to holidays, but updates never stopped. All the Suffolk Pubs, and more have now moved; as have the Kent Pubs (these include obvious London areas like Greenwich & Woolwich etc). The links all appear to still be working [now], but these are now in a different search engine, See: Kent villages & Suffolk Villages. I noticed recently that the Suffolk CAMRA site has been copying much of my material without a proper reference back to the site, commonly known as plagiarism in educational circles - this has been noted, although replies are lacking. Another well known terminology for this is "thief, stop thief!" - the Suffolk CAMRA site is good,  BUT probably all copied from other peoples hard work.

Hertfordshire Pubs & Beer houses are now on the new Hertfordshire Pubs site, and is growing.

The Clapham & Battersea areas of London have received quite an impetus recently, with several new contributors, including Philip Carter & Bill Rigby, plus my usual contributor Stephen Harris. Colin Ager is still my main contributor for Suffolk, and you may enjoy the Suffolk CAMRA site, it is another view of data - even if they steal a lot of my hard work! I have threatened to take a copy of the SuffolkCAMRA site if this continues, without proper referencing; I have taken on bigger fish and won!

All updates for the site are very welcome, please keep them coming!

July 2008:

The usual updates from my excellent, and brilliant researchers. The Suffolk area is nearly complete for 1861 now, thanks to Colin Ager; and the excellent photographs just keep coming from Stephen Harris.

Of importance is the fact that I have just started a couple of new sites : Kent villages & Suffolk Villages. All Pubs in Kent & Suffolk are slowly being moved across to the new sites, with updates only happening on new sites.

There were a few problems with this site recently, largely a serious mistake by Lunarpages, who just deleted the entire site, TWICE! Their support team are pretty good, but I got a little peed off the second time, as the site was unavailable for 3-4 days each time, and I had to revert to a backup which was six weeks old! I think the site is back to normal, but if this happens again?

May 2008:

I spent the holiday weekend looking at the Essex / London area, e.g. Stratford, Leyton, Barking, Walthamstow etc. Of interest for these area is that they move back and forwards in Trade Directories, e.g. the London North Directory is excellent in 1902, which has a street directory listing for most of these areas, then they reappear in Essex Directories in 1917 and 1922 for a short while; so I have added beer retailer listings for both these years at Essex 1917 & Essex 1922. These places are then re-introduced into the London directories.

I also noticed that Walthamstow had some massive gaps from this previous research, and have moved back to the 1901 census for Walthamstow, a massive 75 directory listings with an average (minimum) of forty and up to eighty pages each, which has now been completed. Islington has also been updated with many new 1901 entries.

As an extra, I have also just added another new update by Colin Ager for Suffolk from 1861 census, and various early Suffolk trade directories; and more new pictures by Stephen Harris for anywhere that I find a Pub!

The latest details show 17,318 pages and 4,366 jpeg images plus 392 gif images on the site; compare this with the details listed here in February (see below). Thanks to everybody who supports the site.

April 2008:

Incidentally, every time I update a page, it changes to the newer, simpler format (look and feel).  I have just spent a day and a half updating the whole of Camberwell, mainly 1880 to 1920.

I had an email from a North London CAMRA member, and hope this leads to some new info soon, watch this space. I am keen to add information from all CAMRA organisations if available.

I am getting regular updates of census and trade directory entries for the Suffolk area, kindly provided by Colin Ager; plus the usual plethora of miscellaneous Pubs photos from Stephen Harris. I have spent a couple of days at the Essex Record Office looking at Petty Sessions Victuallers records. Firstly, the staff at the ERO are a wonderful bunch. I did not necessarily need their help, but others did. Everyone was made welcome - WELL DONE to the ERO.

A considerable update has been added, or is being added to the Becontree hundred, this includes Barking, Dagenham, Woodford, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Leyton , Leytonstone , Stratford, Plaistow & Canning Town  etc ; this update has added a whole host of new beer houses and their relevant pub sign / name especially Canning Town, plus I have added the 1886 Trade Directory for Canning Town too - fairy gold dust!

Newhaven in Sussex has been completely updated, thanks to Peter Mason; most of Newhaven now has an additional picture, plus lots of historical changes, more updates to come.

I have dropped Web Expression in favour of another Microsoft product (both are rubbish, some are less rubbish). I spend large amounts of time editing pages in textpad to fix problems, c'est la vie ; I plan to try out ubuntu on one of my older machines, of which I have many.

April showers brings an incredible addition to Islington. Stephen Harris is updating me with modern photographs and pub histories for this area. Also, I have just rebuilt a new PC in vista, which was .. ( Vista is a whole pain in the proverbial, another Microsoft beta product).

March 2008:

Nearing the end of March, 2008, and I have just added around 900 pubs in Hertfordshire. These have been added using the 1912 Trade Directory, and I am also adding more information from Trade Directories between 1882 and 1937 as quickly as I am able. No census information added as of yet. Pubs are sometimes relocated as I rediscover new information. I need some pictures to add to these pages.

Also, I have been updating a few of the Dover, Kent Pubs - through communication with Paul Skelton, who runs a far more useful site for Dover than I could ever accomplish - see Dover History.

The last week or so has been taken up by updating the site to a new format, mostly in Kent, but also elsewhere. Eventually the whole site will be in the simpler format, updates are continuing all of the time. I started a new page, an Image Search for those who are looking for images, and cannot find them on the site - I suffer from copyright, and cannot just copy any images that I find, these are some copyrighted and other good image sites - feel free to email me about anything useful that you find - kevan.

There are now absolutely hundreds of photographs of nearly every  Public House in Suffolk (thanks to Tony Green). These are all signed by Tony, but even better, I love the signature of his bicycle in nearly every picture. More to come, I am about half way there.

If you have a spare half hour or so, also check out the email stupiditys - they are funny; and  there is a host of other useful and interesting material, most Pub related; the Linux page look good too

February 2008:

A major update of the Suffolk Pubs History has been added over the last few days, this always takes time. I did discover along the way that another site was 'copying' all of this information, although the site is now linking back with a reference. We are now good friends.

Canvey Island has another major addition, with a whole host of additions to the Ozonia Hotel, and Henry Goodhind, who ran the establishment during WWII.

Sussex has been added, in the first instance a lot of work on Brighton, and now the alphabetical index of Sussex A - Z, plus many other areas . This will take some time to complete, probably a few weeks, so expect this all some time in March 2008; but much of it is alreadry available, but continuing to build.

Not entirely London, but more importantly Essex. I was chatting to the Foxearth site, what a brilliant site, and spotted some brilliant non-existent Essex maps. These are brilliant.

Some statistics: there are 15,355 html pages (these are ordinary pages, mostly Pubs or listings), there are 3,640 jpeg images, plus 376 gif images. In fact, in total, there are just over 20,000 individual files on the site. (For what it is worth).

In laymans terms, this is about 4,000 pictures and about 14,000 Pubs and Beer Houses, in London, Essex, Kent, Surrey & Suffolk. There are also Sussex on a sister site (e.g. Brighton). When I find the time, Hertfordshire is next.

There is a major update being added for ALL Islington Pubs at present, this is already giving some surprising results. If you have publicans in this area, please let me know if you have any useful information. A major update of the Roebuck, Rochester in Kent was added today, therefore most of the Rochester area was updated at the same time.

Clapham has just been added, this includes parts of Battersea (modern) and New Wandsworth (old). The 1899 London listing is now completed, well, with about 90% of the relevant Pubs on the site. I am quite impressed with this, and I was quite surprised how few Pubs were missing. This listing does not list all the Beer Houses, Hotels etc, but is a good place to find a Pub that you are looking for.

January 2008:

Walton on Naze has just had a whole host of pictures added, really good quality, too - enjoy. These are compliments of the Walton History site.

Just for information, Battersea East has just been added (75 new Pubs), and Battersea North West (74 Pubs) is now complete, as is Battersea South West; and all have been added. Whilst I am checking this area, I will probably add Clapham & Wandsworth! I was quite busy in Panto, now finished, and have a full time job, including driving about 500 miles a week to and from work, so bear with me! There are also considerable updates recently from the 1863 Whites Directory for Becontree Hundred and Chafford Hundred - see History of Stratford site, another project, more still to be added.

All the Pubs (excluding Essex) are probably only about 25% complete, so do expect to see entries missing for many periods. Kent & Suffolk may only be 10% complete. As stated many times, I time slice between different areas, my choice. The more input, information and pictures,  that you give for a particular place, the sooner it gets updated!

The 1899 London listing is nearly done (still on letter C - in reverse order), meanwhile I time slice between updating different areas. Kent was only added recently, and the Dover listing is looking good now. The sites, e.g. the older Essex 1841  will be updated very soon [Jan 2008],  maybe.

December 2007 :

There are some fantastic new images and history related to the Beckwith family at the Lobster Smack, Canvey Island - just added! I reckon there are about 50 to 100 original and new images added every month to the site, although these do not show up on google search very well.

I have continued to update the 1899 London listings, which have taken longer than expected - this brings all of the Pubs listed for 1899 with entries for 1881 -1899 minimum, this is no mean task.

There are now approximately 15,000 pubs and several thousand pictures - google finds only a handful of these pictures in it's image search engine!!!

November 2007:

The London 1899 listing is going through a complete health check, making sure that all Pubs listed in 1the 1899 London listings are complete - this is an interesting update, as most are available, but not All! I am about half way though this check (December 1st 2007).

Kent is a new area that has been listed recently. This is looking good, and continues to progress. A lot of new input is coming from the Kent researchers. Suffolk is still being considerably updated, this includes every town, all contributions receive credits.

Essex has a considerable quantity of good material on the site, mostly provided by Ian Hunter, but is still being added to - see the new additions to Canvey Island.

Sussex, e.g. Brighton is being hosted on another site. This will be moved to this site eventually

The Trumans quarterly journals from 1948 to about 1970 have been perused and scanned, thanks to Alex Wilkinson for providing a considerable quantity of this research.

I am always looking for pictures and photos, of current Pubs. Stephen Harris of the East London CAMRA continues to supply masses of good quality photographic material for Pubs still open, and also now closed. More appear to fall into this 'closed' category, as the Pubs industry copes with more people drinking wine (from the supermarkets).

All for now (and all links are welcome to this site)
